Abstract
In critical and communication studies, "representation" is defined as the production of meaning through conceptual and discursive frameworks. The Afghanistan peace negotiations between the Ashraf Ghani government, the Taliban delegation, and the United States in Doha, Qatar, held significant importance and outcomes for Afghanistan. Therefore, studying the manner in which these negotiations were represented is of great value. This research employs van Dijk's critical discourse analysis method to examine posts published on the Facebook accounts of three members of the peace negotiation team. The posts were selected through purposive non-probability sampling and analyzed within the timeframe of 2019 to the fall of the government in August 2021. The study's context is the social media platform Facebook, which has more users and greater utility in Afghanistan compared to other social media platforms. This is particularly relevant in a society like Afghanistan, where urban public spaces for dialogue are scarce, and virtual spaces have become a primary arena for discourse. The findings reveal that the representation of the Afghanistan peace negotiations on Facebook, as reflected in the posts of the negotiation team members, varies significantly in terms of lexical style, individuals and institutions mentioned, polarization and "othering," presuppositions, implications, and fundamental propositions. Each representation aligns with the political stance and prevailing ideology of the poster, resulting in differing portrayals of the peace negotiations and the involved parties. The most prominent keywords and components related to the peace negotiations include: ending social conflicts, a sacred and benevolent endeavor, a historic opportunity, the conclusion of a decade of bloody conflict, and a chance to rebuild and restructure Afghanistan's system without foreign intervention.
