Abstract
The issue of women has increasingly emerged as a significant social concern. Within Iran, Islam and the prevailing political ideology uphold the elevated status of women, striving to represent them accordingly. However, the disparity between this perspective and the approaches of global capitalism has rendered the issue of women one of the most contentious within Iran's cultural and media landscape. This research delves into the evolution of the portrayal of women in celebratory occasional talk shows aired on IRIB TV, which are produced and broadcasted during various joyous occasions, be they religious or national. Women participate in these programs as hosts or guests, and given IRIB's governmental ownership, their portrayal adheres to certain structures and guidelines.
In this study, we draw upon the literature on representation policies within governmental media to examine and assess twelve celebratory TV talk shows spanning from 2016 to 2021, featuring the presence of women. To accomplish this, we employ John Fiske's semiotic method and purposive sampling. We analyze five main categories within the visual landscape, encompassing signifiers related to values, consistency in the portrayal of women's attire, changes in maintaining apparent categories of attire, linguistic and ideological agency, and the representation of joyous female attire. The findings of the research indicate that, despite the constraints imposed by its governmental ownership, IRIB has succeeded in representing a diversity of women. Furthermore, the portrayal of women through the camera lens was contingent upon relevant policies.
