The Role of Mise-en-Scène in Depicting the Infallibles in Iranian Television Productions: A Comparative Study of the Series Loneliest Leader and Reign of Love

Abstract
This research analyzes the role of mise-en-scène and its impact on the portrayal of the Infallibles (a) in the television series  Loneliest Leader (Tanhatarin Sardar) and Reign of Love (Velayat-e Eshq). The primary focus of the study is to examine how the components of mise-en-scène—such as set design, lighting, and acting—influence the depiction of these sacred figures in television productions. The significance of this research lies in its effort to understand how profound religious and cultural concepts are conveyed through visual media, as well as to explore the challenges associated with portraying the Infallibles (a). This study is applied in purpose and qualitative in nature. The required data were collected through documentary research and analyzed within a neo-formalist framework using an interpretive-analytical approach, followed by a comparative explanation. The findings reveal that various methods exist for depicting the Infallibles (a), with the choice of method depending on the director's perspective. In the series under study, set and costume design played a significant role in portraying the Infallibles (a), while lighting, as a key element, had a greater impact on conveying meaning and emotions to the audience. In particular, in scenes where the faces of the Infallibles were not fully shown, effective lighting more conveyed the mood and essence of the characters. Acting, due to the limitations in depicting the faces of the Infallibles (a), experienced some fluctuations but remained noteworthy in establishing an emotional connection with the audience. The results indicate that the portrayal of the Infallibles in Iranian television has evolved over time, and the effective use of mise-en-scène elements can contribute to improving the depiction of these characters in the future.
